Gladys G. Sotomayor (Gladiola) Mother and Child

   Gladiola Gonzalez Sotomayor has been painting professionally for over 20 years.  She graduated from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia in 1995 where she earned her Master's Degree.  Her works can be found in various public and private collections across the country and in her native homeland, Puerto Rico.  She is well-known for her traveling exhibition titled, "Expresiones de Mujer" (Expressions of a Woman) which included lectures and workshops held in many of the Universities in her native Island.  Her book, "The Art Directory", published in bilingual format, was favorably received in many art institutions and used as a College textbook for an Art Marketing Course. She received the "National Certification" title in 2005 for her excellence in the Education field.
     Figures and portraits are constant subject matters in the artist's work.  Many of them within landscapes or isolated within their own space.  The energetic brush strokes and the vibrant color schemes are especially evident in her Contemporary Christian Collection. These paintings allow the viewer to become detached, if only momentarily, from the physical and material world.
    As a born again Christian, the artist creates paintings full of symbols and meaning, in order to carry the message of salvation and hope through the finished artwork.

Artist Statement:  As I paint, I feel as if I were praying. My spiritual energy releases itself onto the canvas.  Sometimes I paint to release the pain, turmoil, and confusion that sometimes strike me.  As I paint I feel the storm within me calm down and life's bittersweet moments become acceptable. Most of my paintings are meant to make you aware of a different dimension...the Spiritual dimension....and through this awareness, urge you to make God a part of your life.  The text that accompanies some of my works are from the Bible. For a more profound experience, go beyond reading the quoted texts and read several verses before and after.  Life's struggles are for all, God's Word is for all and His Word makes meaning out of chaos.

Gladiola Gonzalez Sotomayor ha estado pintando profesionalmente por más de 20 años.  Es graduada de "University of the Arts" de Filadelfia donde obtuvo su grado de Maestria en 1995.  Sus obras se pueden encontrar en varias colecciones privadas y públicas atráves de la nación y en su tierra nativa, Puerto Rico.  Es conocida por su exhibición rodante títulada, "Expresiones de Mujer" que incluía conferencias y talleres llevados a cabo en las universidades de su isla nativa.  Su libro "Directorio de Arte" publicado en formato bilingüe, fue recibido favorable en muchas instituciones artísticas y usado como un libro de texto en un curso de Mercadeo de Arte. Recibió el título de "Certificación Nacional" por se excelencia en el campo Pedagógico.
Figuras y retratos son temas constantement usados en las obras de la artista. Muchos de ellos en un paisaje o aisaldo en su propio espacio.  Sus pinceladas energéticas y esquemas de colores vibrantes son especialmente evidente en su Coleción de Arte Cristian Contémporaneo. Estas pinturas permiten que el espectador se despeque aunque sea momentáneamente de el mundo físico y material.
Como Cristiana nacida de nuevo la artista crea pinturas llena de simbolísmos y significados para así llevar el mensaje de salvación atráves de su arte terminando.

Declaración de Artista
Cuando pinto siento como si estuviera orando. Mi energía espiritual se descarga sobre el lienzo.  Algunas veces pinto para soltar el dolor y confusión que algunas veces golpean sobre mí. Mientras pinto siento que la tormenta dentro de mí se calma y los momentos agri-dulce de la vida son más tolerables.  Muchas de mis pinturas son para hacerte conciente de otra dimensión....la Dimensión Espíritual ...y atráves de esta conciencia impulsarte hacer Dios parte de tu vida. Los textos que acompañan algunas de mis obras proviene de la Biblia. Para una experiencia más profunda, vayan más allá de leer los textos citados y leen versos antes y despúes. Las luchas de la vida son para todos, y la Palabra de Dios es para todos y su palabra añade significado al chaos.
